Accept Credit Card Payment And Grow Your Profits
Not all businesses accept credit card payment, but when you do accept credit card payment it can be a valuable boost to your bottom line. Consumers understand that it is not as easy to get a credit card merchant account as it is to get a PayPal account, so if you accept credit card payment, it is an automatic boost to your credibility.
If you are an online business, it is particularly important to accept credit card payment. Consumers are increasingly aware that credit card providers offer them significant consumer protection - if they have trouble getting a refund from the merchant, they can simply contact their credit card issuer and the credit card company will refund their money.
This means that if you accept credit card payment, consumers are more likely to "take a chance" on purchasing your product - it is lower risk that using other forms of payment such as direct bank transfer or mailing a check.
How To Accept Credit Card Payment
To accept credit card payment, you will need to have a merchant account with a credit card provider. Generally, you can get one merchant account which covers both Mastercard and Visa from your bank. To accept credit card payment via Amarican Express, Diners Club, or Discover, you will need to set up a merchant account with each of those companies.
Each bank or credit card company will have its own guidelines as to which businesses it will allow to ccept credti card payment, which means that you may be approved by your bank, for example, but rejected by American Express.
Don't worry too much if you don't get approved to accept credit card payment from all the different credit card providers - as long as you accept credit card payment via Mastercard and Visa, you will cover the needs of most of your customers.
If you want to accept credit card payment electronically, for example through a website, you will also need a payment gateway. This provider will ensure that the credit card details of your customers are collected securely and directed to the correct credit card provider for processing.
Why Wouldn't You Accept Credit Card Payment?
When you accept credit card payment, there is always a risk of fraud. In general, the additional sales more than compensate for any lost revenue due to fraud, but you do have to be careful. Pay attention to where in the world the order is originating, and ask yourself whether it seems reasonable that someone in, for example, Nigeria, would be ordering, for example, $2000 of scuba equipment.
When you accept credit card payment, you need to pay close attention to customer service, because your unhappy customers can simply ask the credit card provider to give them a refund.
On the whole, though, most businesses find that starting to accept credit card payment boosts teir revenues and their bottom line. And that's what we're in business for, after, all, isn't it?
